on French Arches paper from hand-set Optima type. Twenty-five original
multi-color illustrations produced using a combination of letterpress,
silk-screen, and hand-coloring techniques. Hand-bound in tan cloth with
black endpapers
in a most unusual deluxe binding created and fabricated by Joseph D’Ambrosio.
An acetate-windowed slipcase showcases a three dimensional hand-painted
ceramic demon mask of Asian origins, produced and hand-glazed by Anita Walden,
which is mounted in the shadowbox cover of the book. The title is printed
on
the
spine in three tiered steps.
Limited to 115 numbered copies and 10 (I-X)
artist’s proofs for a total of 125, all signed by Carol Cunningham.
This
book is a tour de force treatment about tribal and religious masks
from countries around the world. Carol says she “had so darn much
fun doing illustrations of masks that I kept making the book longer and
longer to squash more in”. Her favorite is the silk-screened image
of the Chimu mask, which has the gold ink added. She is also very fond of
the title page with the transformation mask of raven. The effect of D’Ambrosio’s
mounting of Anita’s hand-glazed demon mask is nothing short of stunning.
A masterly and brilliant feat in miniature book art!
