A fascinating collection of Victorian recipes for nineteenth century dishes such as ginger beer, blanc-mange, caudle, and negus. The book is illustrated with wood engravings by the noted artist John de Pol, who also designed the patterned paper used on the cover. The illustrations are printed from the original blocks and complement the historical typography of the book.

From the colophon: Text was set in Monotype Bell by Harold Berliner's Typefoundry. Recipe titles were set by hand in Atlanta, a design manufactured by the innovative Central Type Foundry of St. Louis, Missouri, extant from 1872 until becoming part of the American Typefounders Company in 1892. The type is now a part of the Frederic Nelson Phillips Collection at the South Street Seaport Museum.
